Box Clever Drawings
For the first drawing lesson this week, we were instructed to draw using marks. As a warm up we had to look carefully at the object and make a series of marks that best brought across the texture and feel of the object. I found this way of drawing quite liberating as it wasn't focused on the outline of the object, but the surface texture. It was also a good technique to learn - from now on when I'm faced with a daunting object to draw, I'll warm up with a series of mark-making and try to make the whole drawing out of marks rather than focusing on the outline.
The second drawing lesson was very different from the first. As these drawing were primarily geared towards use in the digital design and screen printing block, the drawings had to be very graphical. I found it quite hard to keep it up as I kept wanting to introduce some tone. It was also very difficult for me to draw inside boxes. Towards the end of the swatchbook, I started to draw large scale on separate sheets of paper and then dissected the drawing to select the most interesting sections. Looking back, I wish I had started out doing large scale mark-making and then filled the boxes with cut-outs. I also could have introduced more tonal drawings for more variety.
